So I was thrilled a few years ago when my parents bought me a subscription to a beading magazine.
I spent hours poring over the glossy pages, looking at the pictures, the projects, and trying to decide what to make first. I already had piles and piles of beads and I was happy to have some new projects to use them in.
But as I sat there reading the magazine, that’s when I realized something.
Even among my piles of beads, I didn’t have the supplies to make any of the pieces!
All of the projects required some sort of specialized beads that I didn’t have – or had even heard of. I did not have a 3 inch heart-shaped stone, or 55 cube-shaped beads, or fine wire mesh. And I could tell that substituting the materials with what I had was not going to work
“Ok,” I thought. “I’ll just find a project I like and then I’ll buy whatever I need.”
That’s when I came to realization # 2.
I didn’t want to make any of the projects! All of the projects in the magazine were horribly complicated, would take hours to make, and didn’t leave any room for creativity. But I found one and tried anyway.
Big mistake.
The result was a tangled mass of thread. The ‘step-by-step’ instruction definitely left a few things out – if only I could have seen someone doing it!
So after a few more attempts at the projects, I realized that there was an easier way.
I would just make my own jewellery designs.
And that is exactly what I did. I’d make a necklace with the techniques I knew, and then I’d expand upon them to make a different design. I experimented. And I had fun.
And I made it using what I had – my favourite pieces were created with the beads I never thought I’d use.
So now I want to take what I’ve learned and teach you how to make your own jewellery – without selling you thousands of dollars in supplies, or confusing you with hard-to-follow instructions.
That’s why I’m showing you with video instead of with a book. You can see exactly what I’m doing without trying to visualize a lot of written instructions.
